Proton trade-in discount gets owners of old cars excited





PETALING
JAYA: The mini-budget proposal to offer a RM5,000 discount for owners
of cars more than 10 years old has people excited at the thought of
exchanging their old cars for brand new vehicles. Business
management and marketing graduate Tong Whye Loon, met at a Proton Edar
dealership in Mutiara Damansara here yesterday, said he was extremely
keen to trade in his old car for a brand new Proton Gen-2. “I
think it is a brilliant idea. The scheme actually encourages ‘vintage’
cars owners like myself to change cars,” said the owner of a
15-year-old Citroen ZX. The 22-year-old said he would not have considered buying a new car had the scheme not existed. “It is safer and healthier for the people, too. Older cars have higher carbon emissions and tend to break down a lot,” he said. In
Johor Baru, clerk Zainal Latif, who had almost given up hope of selling
the old Mazda 323 that had been in his family for the past 34 years,
wasted no time taking up the offer. “Dealers had told me the car was worth about RM1,000, but now I will get RM5,000 for it. That is wonderful!” he exclaimed. Zainal, 45, said he had ordered a new Proton Persona and was praying his car loan application would be approved soon. Hairi
Nasiff, also a clerk, said the move would help boost the flagging
economy as more people with old cars would consider buying new ones. Hairi said he had also decided to trade in his 12-year-old Proton Tiara for a new Saga. “I
tried to sell my car before this, but was told it was worth only
RM2,000. Now I’ll get extra money,” he said, adding that it was also a
good move to get old cars off the road. Contractor Ismail Abu, 41, said his family was extremely relieved he was finally changing his 27-year-old Ford Escort. “My
four children refuse to be dropped off at school in the old car because
they are too embarrassed. They can’t wait for the new Proton Persona
now,” he joked. Proton dealer and Edaran Sri Sutera Otomobil Sdn Bhd manager Abu Bakar Ahmad said he expected the discount to boost car sales. “Ever since the announcement was made, I’ve been swamped with enquiries from customers who want to buy new cars,” he said.
