Re: How To Be Good At English
Watching movies and dramas are one of the best solution.
For me, someone who rarely read, I don't really know why, watching movies and dramas are the way I improved, my English.
We can easily learn new words, good or bad.
Besides, the other way would be try practicing with someone who speaks really fluently. Make friends with them. That what i do starting from my primary school days. Talking with them, you learn how to use the right word at the right time. Just don't be shy, don't be afraid to speak in English with people, it's a process of learning.
Then, I improved my English through online games. Interact with international players.
Not one of the best solution, where mostly you use short form, but at least you can improve your English.
And always remember that "Practice makes perfect".

Re: How To Be Good At English
agreed with zaidrick.
interact with international players through Massive Multiplayer games (MMORPG) is one of the best way to get used in english.
but the fact that malaysian always starts with 'u malay/chinese?'
if u say malay, he'll start speaking malay
if u say chinese, he'll start mixing engdarin (english + mandarin)
not helping!
so my recommendation is, try playing the more INTERNATIONAL online games such as Tales of Pirates.
the ones that dont have the 'Asian server' or such.

Re: How To Be Good At English
You don't need educated parents to start young. My parents are Javanese, and I had no problem using English since I was little. Its a matter of how much exposure you get, which doesn't mean it have to be from your parents if you're young.
Well, I was kinda neglected, and spent most of my time watching Singapore channels. Maybe that helped a bit.
And even my matriculation (during my time), only 2 got band 6, which is kinda ridiculous. I mean, matriculation is supposed to assemble the best of the best from all walks of life.
Some of the students in matriculation had corporate parents (meaning they speak English at home), but I'd rate them as mediocre in the language.
So, it doesn't matter who your parents are.

nah... for me it's depend on you how desperate you to learn english. bcoz even you talk wit people who do not have a good english you still can improve yourself since you can detect their weak phrase... but dont laught at them and remember that everyday we need to practice a new thing. Thanks everyone for adviced.

Agree with zultekmilennia, we don't need educated parents to develop our English, it depends on ourselves. Just like Ieyl said, it depend on how much u want to improve your English. You don't have to detect others weak phrases or something, we just need to be familiarize and comfortable when speaking in English.

Re: How To Be Good At English
my mother is a geography & pengajian am teacher.
my father didn't even had UPSR back in his days (war time)
but they rojak with me at home.
sometimes they speak malay, sometimes they speak english. But usually my dad was the one who speaks english + hokkien with me the most (eventho the hokkien all rotten bad cursing language. lol).
and i grew up watching POKEMON. i'm not shy to admit this. but pokemon sure does improve my english. A LOT!
my mom bought the CDs and i watch this anime for like thousands of times and i could even rephrase the dialogue together with the character of the anime! they're using english subtitle with the in bracket telling what sound. for example, got this siren sound and the subtitle will rite there (siren sound) and i go "oh. that's a siren sound!"
foot note: when i was young, i can draw all 250 pokemons! LOL

it doesn't consist any 3rd party to master Eng,its just only you, whether you want to learn is just one self desire, not by the environment....so next TT we should all speaks in English!har3

Re: How To Be Good At English
because they don't. At least, not usually. I do have a bunch of guys that I converse in English with. It's not awkward, as all of us know our own level of mastery in English. You can rojak a bit, but keeping 90% of the conversation English is a good start.
Though, even chinese sometimes suck at English, so look long and hard for someone like that. I made a blog post discussing the state of English mastery in Malaysia, and one guy replied to me. He said that he was interested in talking to me, seeing as how I casually made the elaborate post without noticeable hiccups or errors.
So, I was like, sure, why not? It was back in my second semester, and we've become friends since. Oh, and he's a Sarawakkian, btw.

Re: How To Be Good At English
Yerp, i agree, it can be awkward speaking English with Malay friends, but not all. When I was in primary school, I befriends with Chinese who speaks English at school and at home. That's 1 way I improved my English, even though some of them rojak a bit. But it doesn't matter, as long as you can be comfortable in speaking English.
Agree with Mustang, watching English cartoons is one way to improve English. It's fun and a simple way to improve English.
