so what roxxy is trying to tell us is,

rather 'watching' those movies, he prefers reading them. not in a from of manga or comic but in words.

damn.

I strongly suggest to practice English speaking frequently, if possible make it everyday..and you guys can try memorize 2 new words per day to improve your vocab..

rather than read or watching English movies..you will definitely enhance a lot as per word you spoke, you can build you courage, talking manner, as well as your grammar (i myself have a bad grammar, uhuk T_T)..

that was my experience after a year working in this multinational company, where my boss is a Holand guy, and our customers are German and US people ><""

i have no choice...

but seriously, u should nullify your mother-tongue first. then only u'd be able to speak fluent english.

I'm wondering. why did UMP, FKM especially recruits tutors/lecturers whom english sucks? seriously I'm being frank.

its either their english sucks, or im too stupid to understand. but usually the foreign lecturers were the ones with weird languages.

I find it difficult to understand and the class become very. very. very boring.

agree, the slang is the main problem in comunication,i've been to a program call ICONHCD,where all people working as human resources, lectures and any one who has ideas on how human capitalizing their development skill,i can't explain well but the main point here is,people come all over the world, and got this one old guy from india,i don't even understand a word from him,but the audience even ask him some question!!

so the more you listen and speak, the slang should be no problem, like mr caer here,he can adopt the slang into him and now he can understand them(german and US) better, congrats!

it might not be the slang that would pose the problem here. it's the accent to be exact. my british fellows would make your eyes bug when you hear them speak. i grew up with them, so the impact on me is nil. same thing with australian and kiwi accents.

You see, I've pointed this out, but you really need to start at an early age for any language, or you'll have a hard time later on in life. Well, we're all in that stage now, so maybe you could apply it to your siblings or children.

And, about watching movies, manga, porns, or any medium of entertainment, it depends on the person itself. My housemates watches a lot of movies. tv series (korean with eng subtitles), but most did really bad in MUET.

It baffled me at first, as I would really place them in Band 4, or at least 3.

I've tutored English classes for PMR and SPM students (long ago, before I entered UMP), but since most of them were really bad (no surprise there), I just taught them what they needed to know to pass the exams.

Exposure in both ways is really important. You have to receive and give in order for it to be effective. Like how you would teach someone else in order to see whether you really understand it yourself.

Since its a week holiday now, i've been kinda bored at home so i browse through magazines/books.

I saw a school magazine of Kolej MARA Kulim. My lil bro was from Kolej MARA Kulim doing Foundation in Engineering Technology (FET) but now currently pursuing degree in mechanical engineering (aviation technology) at MIAT UniKL.

You can see the statistic of matriculation students' result of MUET. few hundreds got band 3, not even 10 got band 4 and only 2 get band 5.

who's to blame?

Re: How To Be Good At English

hmm... There is absolutely no other way to be good in english.. other than reading. The more you read, the better you will get.

I disagree with starting young = you'll be good in english. Not all people are blessed with educated parents who have inexplicable
skills in english.

In my house, we speak in our local malay dialec. I would never sacrifice my so-called mother tongue for the sake of english XD.. NEVARRR..

Back to the topic XD-->

The only reason why we would be better if we started young is at that time, we thought less about how to use the correct sentence construction, correct grammar, or expanding our vocabs but more on to how we can use it to communicate better.

If we read english and enjoy what we are reading then all those things bolded verbatim will come in naturally.

Just a word of advice.. no harm meant..

Oh yeah, mastering english is divided into 3
1 - speaking
2 - reading
3 - writing
and its the same with every other languages in the world.

I can give lessons if anyone wants them. I am not good in english but I can help you improve as you can help me improve.

(XDXD pjg nyer aku tulis aahahhakz..)

Re: How To Be Good At English

Post by Sengal on Tue Aug 04, 2009 7:44 pm

can i add up one more?

4-watching movies and dramas...

seriously we are in youth age now,and because we are typical malaysian we rarely reads a lot which num 2 is out,and since we are too shame to speak then num 1 also out, hence whats left is only writing, which is why normally we often excel in writing(example here,in forum) but when it comes to speaking, your tongue become numb and you just keet shut up all the time

movies however can be apply to other language too,for example i often watch Korean dramas, hence some of the words i manage to catch and it is one way of learning(i even manage to catch some sentences, but Korean=mandarin, the bo po mo fo stuff and tone stuff REALLY MATTERS so its quite hard actually),and if you watch a hell lots of dramas and movies, you may have a lil experience on how to speak fluently(more like you copy on how they speak, but don't go into gangsta movies, didn't bring you that much of help)...oh and by the way,we are BRITISH english,so its better you watch brit stuff rather than American stuff(but most of the TV station only showed American right?)

but still,to master it you still have to do num 1,that is speaking, and if you cant speak you have to master num 2 that is reading, both are mutually important to other....and dont be ashamed when speaking, got my Kelantanese friend and he often ask me if he got Kelantan accent when he speech,i like that kind of attitude
