Another world no.1 for Malaysia

Pei Tty-Eei Hui World No 1

Friday, 16 January 2009

By : K.M. BOOPATHY</a>

BRIEF though it may be but Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui can take pride as
they have created history by becoming the first Malaysian women’s
doubles to become World No 1.

The latest ranking was released by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) yesterday.

Spoiler:
Pei Tty-Eei Hui, despite losing in the quarter-finals of the Malaysia
Open last week, replaced Olympic champions Du Jing-Yu Yang of China as
the top pair after spending more than a month as the World No 2.

Eei Hui, while happy to have reached the top spot after consistent
results over the last four months, said they are still behind China’s
pairs.

“It is a another breakthrough for us but performance wise, we are still
not the top pair as Du Jing-Yu Yang and other China pairs haven’t been
regularly playing on the international circuit,” said Eei Hui.
“It would be better if we can improve our performance this year rather than focusing on the world ranking.

“We will remain at the top until the beginning of the All England (in
March) if the Taiwan pair (Cheng Wen Hsing-Chien Yu Chin) don’t clinch
the ongoing Korea Open.

“Our aim is to do better when the top pairs from China are playing as this is where our ability will be gauged.”

The men’s singles saw Lee Chong Wei consolidating his position as the
World No 1 over Lin Dan of China and the scenario is not expected to
change until March, which will stretch the Malaysian’s reign at the top
to seven months.

In the men’s doubles, Zakry Latif-Fairuzizuan Tazari remained as World
No 4 while Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong moved up a rung to World No 5.

Wong Mew Choo’s drop continued as she fell a notch from 11th position
to 12th while Julia Wong broke into the top 20 after she moved up from
21st to World No 16.
