Post by thai on Wed Jan 07, 2009 12:11 pm

Any body who expert in wireless setup here?

1. How to set up the wireless security network ID and KEY.

2. How to change the password?

3. What is the effect after changing the password?

4. How to block the laptop or anyone who use my wireless before.

Kindly reply this post to help me.

Thank you.

what type wireless router do you have?

generally to enter the router to make changes, you go (From a wired connection) to the following web address:

http://192.168.1.1

enter the username and password (on a netgear router you can find this under the router, for linksys it is in the owners manual. other manufacturer should have in manual as well)

to set WEP or WPA, simply go to the wireless page, then to security. here you choose which type you want. note it must be one or the other - not both.

for WEP you will enter a passphrase and click the "generate key" button. You will see 4 unique keys appear. Only one will be active - the one with the black dot next to it. Write that number down (or copy and paste into notepad - will be easier this way).

You should change the SSID (network name) to something different from default so you know which network is yours. - generally this is on the main page or on the wireless settings main page.

ALL CHANGES MADE IN THE ROUTER MUST BE COMPLETED BY CLICKING THE SAVE OR APPLY BUTTON, OR THEY WILL NOT WORK!!!

-----

Anyone who wants to connect to the router will need the encryption key (or WPA passphrase). Keep this on a flash drive so you can easily copy/paste it into the wireless connection dialog on any new computers ;)

-----

2) check the different windows there - its gotta be around somewhere in there. your manual should tell you definitely.

3) after changing the password, people who know the default password, but NOT yours, will not be able to log in to make changes on the router.

4) You can always change the encryption key again if need be. OR if you want to get advanced you can do MAC address filtering whereby only allowing certain MAC addresses to connect to the router.

i didnt know how to password-protect my wireless network too yesterday when i got myself a router. was going to make a call to my broadband service provider to get everything settled and i would have been charged 20 to 30 bucks. but fortunately, i found all the instructions from the owners manual that came with my router set. and i managed to set it up with ease. . it was so easy, i couldnt believe it myself.

i need to ask though what is the difference between WEP and WPA? theres alot of computer terms that i didnt get when i was setting up the wireless network. heck...

WEP = encryption type, this is the most compatible with all devices
WPA = security type, better protection, less compatible

either way will keep people without the key/passphrase from connecting to the network. however, WPA is more secure than WEP. That said though, depending on home size you can get away with WEP instead of WPA. Some devices like PSP and PS3 wont deal well with WPA and so you have to settle for WEP.
