GEORGE TOWN: Penang has banned Ascot Sports Sdn Bhd, which was given gaming bookie’s licence by the federal government, to conduct any sports betting business here.

Selangor moved to prevent sports betting in the state earlier this week and Kelantan is likely to follow suit.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said Friday that although Penang had not received any application from the company to carry out the betting business here, the state would write to Ascot Sports to inform them of the state’s decision.

“The decision was made after consultation with all the state exco members.

“I believe Penang is the first state to apply this ban state-wide,” he told a press conference Friday.

The sports gaming licence was issued to tycoon Tan Sri Vincent Tan’s Ascot Sports early this year.

Lim said, on behalf of the state, he would direct both the Penang Municipal Council and the Seberang Prai Municipal Council to bar sports betting by Ascot Sports here.

“Under Section 101(v) of the Local Government Act, the local council is empowered to deal with issues concerning the municipality’s safety, health and convenience,” he said.

Section 101 outlines the further powers of the local authority and sub-section (v) reads that in addition to any other powers conferred, a local authority shall also have the power to do all things necessary for or conducive to the public safety, health and convenience.

Lim added the decision did not mean that the state was against betting or gaming outlets but it was concerned over the excessive number of draws and special draws being conducted by the licensed operators.

“The excessively high number of draws and special draws amounting to 12 per week by the three gaming companies licensed by the Barisan Nasional government should be reduced to promote a healthier social fabric,” he said.

He added many of the breadwinners feel obliged to ‘chase’ after each draw resulting in substantial loss of income to their family and children.

National Gerakan Youth deputy chief Oh Tong Keong in a statement called on the Government to reconsider legalising sports betting operations in Malaysia.

He said regulating sports betting operations would create more unhealthy activities.

“Sports betting will not only encourage loan sharks to gain more opportunity, it also causes family income to be spent unnecessarily,” he added.

Following Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), Selayang City Council (MPS) and Ampang Jaya City Council (MPAJ) to freeze the sports betting license, Oh said MPPP should also take similar steps.

“Instead of legalising sports betting, the government should encourage more sports participation among the people for the sake of unity.

“Let us look at the recent Thomas Cup tournament as a good example. Malaysians regardless of race and religion had joined hands together to cheer for our national team.


“We do not want Malaysians to be cheering for different countries because of their bets on the different teams”.
