Baba-Nonya Heritage Museum
I have been to this museum a few times whenever I have outstation visitors. This museum gives you a glimpse of the glorious past of rich Peranakan lifestyle which is now history in the modern age of convenience and comfort.
The visitor room features impressive chinese art paintings and antique furniture. You can take a close look at the finely crafted wall partition and put your hand on the stone-cool marble table which serves one of this purpose.
The second floor is for living rooms and tea rooms. You can find a mixture of locally crafted Peranakan items and imported stuff from England. Notice that the second floor has a door lock on the staircase to prevent burglars from entering the house and there is a hole on the master bedroom to spot visitors at the door. The air well in the middle of the house and the kitchen is worth looking at.
Please join the guided tour to hear the details of daily life of Peranakan in this house. Be prepared however that one of the chubby tour guide is very grumpy and show no interest in whatever she is reciting!
One of the biggest complaint of the museum is lack of air conditioning. However, I feel that we should be able to feel the actual living condition of those in the past.
Traveler Description: Art and objects illustrating Malaysia’s wide cultural diversity are on display in this restored home. Tours are by appointment only.
Attraction type: History museum, Historic home, Museum
Address: 48-50 Jl Tun Tan Cheng Lock Melaka
Malaysia

Jonker Street
description:
Jonker street is a very attractive place in Melaka. Visitors must go there before you leave Melaka! The street is more happening at every night of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. During the three nights, you can buy many souvenirs that are only available in Melaka, Jonker Street, also, many delicious foods are available! Hai Nan coffee, cendol, laksa, and so on are recommended.
review from traveler:
This is our first time to Malacca and of course we have to hit Jonker Street. We went on a Sunday night so we expected the street to be crowded which it was. We parked the car at the Jonker St carpark. As you walk along the lane that lead to Jonker St, you'll find pubs and cafes. It reminded me of Boat Quay meets Bugis St. On the str itself, you can find a range of stuff to buy home from cute magnets to IQ toys, from clothes to antiques. But since we were travelling with a 22 mth old tot, we decided to check out the quaint shophouses instead, just one step away from the hustle and bustle. Our first stop was Jonker Gallery. Personally, i really like how the shop look from the outside. Inside this hip-looking place are cool, retro designed bags and trendy clothing. Needless to say, we purchased two bags for around $70. Okay, it's not street price, but we were finding something more unique besides the fridge magnet as souvenirs.
Our next shop (we went back the next day) was a handpainted batik shop which sells unique T-shirts. It is located along the lane near the Jonker St carpark. The owner, who trained in Terengganu in batik painting, mixed his own paint. According to hisKorean wife, who helped in painting some of the T-shirts, his paints are the only one-of-a-kind in the world. I fell in love with the vivid colours and quirky designs so we got 2 for the tot and 1 for myself. They cost us around $55.
It was worth the trip as we find that there is something for everyone here. We will definitely recommend everyone to visit Jonker Street if they come to Malacca.
