Kota Bharu, The Islamic City

Post by radin87 on Sun Nov 02, 2008 11:31 am

Kota Bharu (Jawi:كوت بهارو), a city in Malaysia, is the state capital and Royal City of Kelantan. It is also the name of the territory (jajahan) in which Kota Bharu City is situated. The name means 'new city' or 'new castle/fort' in Malay. Kota Bharu is situated in the northeastern part of Peninsular Malaysia, and lies near the mouth of the Kelantan River at 6°8′N 102°15′E / 6.133, 102.25. In 2005, it had an estimated population of 425,294, making it one of the largest towns on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
This northeastern Malaysian city is close to the Thai border, and is home to many mosques. Also of interest are various museums and the unique architecture of the old royal palace (still occupied by the sultan and sultanah and off-limits to visitors but viewable from outside) and former royal buildings (which can be visited) in the center of town.
The City is served by Keretapi Tanah Melayu's East Coast Line at the nearby Wakaf Baharu Station, in the town of Wakaf Baharu across the Kelantan River

On 1 October 2005, Kota Bharu was declared Kota Bharu, The Islamic City

More about Kota bharu can be seen here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kota_Bharu

Panorama:

Also the only city (maybe the last) in malaysia where Jawi is widely used:

"minumlah Coca Cola.. "

notice the store signs and the road signs.....there are jawi words on them. my paternal grandparents live in kuala terengganu, and that makes me a frequent patron of that town.

whenever i go back to kota bharu, potable water would always be the big deal for me. i dont know why but it seems i cant get used to the water in kelantan even though ive been a frequent patron of that town. on the other hand, i have always loved the food there especially the thai food in wakaf bharu. super scrumptious. i have never left town without paying restoran chiang mai or restoran phuket a visit. never missed the chance, not even once.
