UMP's Strategies to Produce World-Class Graduates
Today's Soft Skills II seminar had me thinking about what UMP is doing to produce world-class graduates.
We all know that UMP's mission is to be a world-class, competency-based technical university. I interpret this as being able to provide the education & training to produce graduates that are marketable not only locally but abroad.
So I'm listing down some of the strategies that can be done at 4 main levels to achieve that mission. I'll list it like this:
Level
- strategy
Student
- has the initiative to improve self-confidence & communication skills
- active in extra curricular activities (debate, culture, sports etc)
- participate in research: I understand that some of the theses done are very simple experiments, but abroad, the students have to conduct research on something that can solve a current issue/problem
Faculty
- diversify non-technical subjects: our electives are all technical subjects but in foreign universities, students can take subjects like accounting, law, philosophy etc for their electives. I think this is important to build a well-rounded student.
- ensure all courses are certified: this is a given point. Plus I noticed (for chemical engineering) we start learning most of the basic principles in sem 3, but in foreign uni, they learn mass transfer in sem 2.
- lecturers must teach in English: if the lecturers can't teach in English, the students will forever be comfortable in not speaking English but they whine later about not getting jobs.
- internal evaluation of lecturers: I don't know how the evaluation forms we fill about lecturers actually work coz some lecturers get worse every sem. I think they have to take competency tests: some lecturers' technical skills can be worse than the students'!
UMP
- ensure quality of lecturers: it may be far-fetched but it would be nice if we can get Master/PhD holders to be lecturers. Degree holders isn't good enough.
- admission of international students & lecturers: we're already doing it so this is a good sign; the more diverse, the more we can learn about other cultures etc.
MOHE
- organize more foreign exchange programs
- transfer manpower, technology, database etc from other universities
I'd like you all to:
1. Agree/disagree with the strategies
2. Contribute opinions/more strategies
I think this is a good way for us to identify what UMP needs to improve, and what it & we can do to achieve it

good strategy.
i'd say it only look good on paper. executing at ump by the ump authority? hm. im not so sure bout that.
but what's the point taking international student who cant even speak/understand english? wont it be like problem to those student?
or does ump taking international student anonymously just for the sake of "oh! UMP ade student international! hebat sial!"?
sorry for being negative these past few days.

Hmm yeah this is a big issue...I heard that the HEPA staff got meeting the morning, then minum pagi...kerja lagi, then lunch...kerja then minum petang...kerja then balik...If I'm wrong, please correct me, but we won't see this kind of...attitude in private sector.

I'm leaning towards the 2nd one

my experience working in private sector (during LI).
work starts at 8 am and ends at 5 pm. Monday to Saturday. Weekend is Sunday ONLY.
during working days, rest is 1 hour. Its up to you how u're going to use that 1 hour,
but usually people would do this:
minum pagi : 15 minutes
lunch: 30 minutes
minum petang: 15 minutes
total resting hour: 1 hour.
but for UMP stuff?
i've seen they come to eat at cafe at 9am! wth?
it is as if they come, punch their attendance and go eat.
no supervision!!
